NEW WORKS BY RICHARD STEVENS

PRESS RELEASE

The landscape has been the main subject matter of my work for inspiration and reference over the course of my career. There are several influences I can site which shaped my artistic vision.  Eastern mysticism took hold of my imagination and preoccupied me as a young adult. There are scientific theories (especially in physics and biology) that delve into difficult questions such as the relationship of consciousness to matter that influences how I see the world, and in turn, painting. Principles in my tai chi practice parallel and overlap much of the principles I adhere to in art.  I give credit to music, another influence, in coaxing out my lyrical tendencies. Of course, studying the masters whether in museums or reproductions, and checking in on what contemporary painters are doing is ongoing. I am fortunate to live in Santa Fe where there is a thriving art scene.
