Chris Segre-Lewis: A Sense of Flight - New Paintings 2018

PRESS RELEASE

Chris Segre-Lewis

A Sense of Flight – New Paintings 2018

Opens May:  Through June 15,  2018

TEW Galleries is pleased to present its first solo show for Chris Segre-Lewis, a landscape artist, who, in the course of completing his MFA at the University of Kentucky, realized the horse country west of the Allegheny Mountains had once been the “New Frontier”.  This quickly developed into a fascination for our American West as seen by artists over the last 200 years.

While taking on tradition, Segre-Lewis, who is originally from Jamaica, views the landscape from above, in quasi aerial perspectives in which crisscrossing rivers become bold lines; fields naturally become geometric shapes and geographic surfaces encourage a reverie with a uniquely contemporary perspective.

One of Segre-Lewis’ intention is, in his words, “to express the spiritual appeal of the west with its grand, perceptually overwhelming vistas that tend to read as God-sized marks built upon celestial compositions.”

Chris Segre-Lewis is an associate professor of art at Asbury University in Kentucky and has exhibited in the southeast.  He was also an artist in residence at Murlough House, Murlough National Trust, Dundrum, Northern Ireland.

Opening reception: Friday, May 4, 2018: 6.00 – 9.00 p.m.
