 Statement:

Animals have held my interest and deeply inspired my work for over two decades quite simply because they have always been my respite.

In their presence, I tend to find myself more squarely in the moments of my own life. My mind goes unusually quiet, and the space that would normally be occupied by excessive thoughts is suddenly replaced by a deep feeling of connection.

Whether it’s watching a horse calmly grazing, witnessing a coyote disappear into the brush, or enjoying the company of the neighbor’s dog, it’s as if animals themselves are direct conduits to a more wordless state where one can pause and feel.

I endeavor to create paintings that elicit even a small fraction of the same state that animals provoke in person—to offer viewers a brief respite from our very human, habitual overthinking, using my subjects to channel feelings of vigor, tranquility, or revelry.

In a broader sense, my hope is that my body of work might also serve as a reminder of the extraordinary beauty and diversity of the animal kingdom with whom we share this planet, from the most humble and common creature to the most wild and endangered.
